Quirky and enigmatic, my sculptures stutter-step along the uneasy edge between beauty, menace and humor. Tension, penetration and gravity
bind them in a restless union. I believe these crazy creations embody some fanciful narrative, or even manifest quasi-life. Some are
reproducing—the result of my own family with four children, I think. Others are darker—biting off decent chunks of sin and death for visual
digestion. Each piece exists in its own odd sphere, subject to its own strange rules and reasons: kin to one another, yet simultaneously
individual and unique. The Japanese refer to this phenomenon as having the same smell.
In this series, I am delving deeper into the connective natures of my materials and forms. The balancing of the natural and unnatural worlds, the
human-made and organic, and the mechanical and biological is an ever-present consideration in my work. Concurrently, I defer to the formal
considerations of my training and my own innate questions about beauty. I find fascination and marvel in commonplace materials: the spreading
twist of matte-black, dry wall screws, or the ragged cut and fray of heavy denim.
I hope ultimately, that you will find the smell seductive. March 2007
